Morning Glory Smoothie Bowl

February 7, 2016

Even though on most of these cold and rainy mornings all I want to do is tuck into a hot bowl of sweet sweet porridge, there’s nothing like a fresh smoothie bowl filled with superfoods and topped with nuts and granola to brighten up a morning. There are millions of different ways to make smoothies, but this is my morning go-to – it tastes amazing, it’s filling, and is fortified with spirulina, maca powder and hemp powder.

Superfood powders often have really strong tastes on their own, so I never advise anyone to attempt adding them to a salad or something! Smoothies, however, are probably the best place to incorporate lots of different ones as the sweetness of the fruit often covers up the tartness of the superfoods. It’s also important to start small- the first time I tried adding superfoods to my smoothie, I went waaay over the top, and ended up ruining my smoothie and giving myself a stomach ache. They really are so nutritiously potent- so I would advise starting with a teaspoon, and making your way up to a tablespoon.
As I mentioned earlier, I use spirulina, maca and hemp in this smoothie. Spirulina is an incredible source of antioxidants, B-vitamins and iron, whereas maca provides a bunch of calcium, zinc and a bunch of vitamins (such as C,B and E), as well as being an amazing source of energy. Lastly, hemp is packed with Omega-6 and Omega-3, as well as being one of the best sources of plant-based protein out there. Feel free to add different superfoods to this smoothie- but this really is a great combination!
